One of the most exquisite objects in Military Museum of Saadabad is a metal mace in the shape of the head of a cow.

This mace which was made during Shah Tahmasp Safavi`s period (1524-1576), weights 825 grams, its length is 66.5 cm and its width is 13.5 cm.

On the mace, the words: “نصر من الله و فتح قریب” that means: “The victory is from God and it will be soon” has been carved.

Mace is one of the standoff weapons of fighters which were used in pitched battles. Mace was usually so heavy to be quite useful while hitting.

During Safavid dynasty fighters used a kind of mace which was called “The six feather mace”, it was made of tempered steel and it could break the helmet while hitting. Using a kind of mace called “head of cow” was also popular that its strength was less than “six feather mace”.

Over time, by using firearms, the use of maces reduced till it was just a ceremonial feature while Qajar dynasty and gradually it became obsolete.
